- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften, about 10 minutes.
- Stir in the brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper.
- Reduce the heat to low and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for another 15-20 minutes until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.
- Remove from heat and stir in the fresh thyme leaves.
Serving
- Serve warm as a side dish or as a topping for grilled meats.
Notes
Store leftovers in airtight containers. Can freeze portions and reheat in a skillet over low heat. Add a dash of balsamic vinegar when reheating for freshness.
