Ingredients

For the pastry

  • 2 sheets sheets of puff pastry, thawed if frozen
  • 1/2 cup Nutella or other chocolate hazelnut spread
  • 1 large egg for egg wash
  • 1 tablespoon milk for egg wash
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
  • Star-shaped cookie cutter (optional, for tree topper)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Place one sheet of puff pastry on the prepared baking sheet and roll it out if needed.
  • Warm the Nutella in the microwave for 10–15 seconds and spread it evenly over the puff pastry, leaving a small border all around.
  • Place the second sheet of puff pastry on top and gently press down to seal the edges snugly.
  • Cut the stacked pastry into a large triangle, reserving scraps for the trunk and decorations.
  • Cut horizontal strips on both sides of the triangle from the top down to create branches, then gently twist each strip to form a realistic tree shape.
  • Cut a small rectangle from the scraps to create a trunk and use the star-shaped cookie cutter for the top decoration.

Baking

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk and then brush this mixture over the entire pastry to give it a beautiful golden shine.
  • Bake for 20–25 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  • Before serving, dust with powdered sugar for an extra festive touch.

Notes

Store-bought puff pastry can save time, but homemade will enhance flavor. You can swap Nutella for other spreads as desired.
