Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by slicing the onion to create beautiful petals. Cut off the top and bottom of the onion, then make deep cuts downwards, ensuring the petals remain connected at the base.
  • Immerse the onion in buttermilk for at least 10 minutes to tenderize it and infuse flavor.
  • Combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper in a separate bowl.
  • Carefully remove the onion from buttermilk and shake gently to remove excess liquid.
  • Coat the onion thoroughly in the flour mixture.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  • Spray the coated onion with cooking spray.

Cooking

  • Place the onion in the air fryer basket and cook for 8-10 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  • Carefully remove the blooming onion from the air fryer and serve it hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Consider low-fat buttermilk or gluten-free flour for healthier alternatives. Pair with ice cream for dessert or serve as a centerpiece at gatherings. Watch for overbaking to maintain crispiness.
