Ingredients
  

For the cake batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the fudge layer

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 3/4 cups hot water Do not stir after layering.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease a 9-inch square baking dish.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and salt.
  • Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.
  • Pour the cake batter into the prepared baking dish.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cocoa powder, and sprinkle evenly over the cake batter.
  • Carefully pour the hot water over the entire surface of the cake batter without stirring.

Baking

  • Bake for 35-40 minutes until the center is set and the top is cakey with bubbling sauce underneath.

Notes

Optional: Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. For added flavor, include espresso powder in the dry ingredients.
